About this tour

La Leona Waterfall, in Curubandé near Liberia and the slopes of Rincón de la Vieja, is one of the most dynamic adventures in Guanacaste. Unlike a traditional national park trail, this is a semi-aquatic, expedition-style hike.

You walk, scramble, float and swim your way up the river to a hidden canyon where a waterfall drops into a vivid turquoise pool.

Tour highlights

  • Hidden canyon and turquoise pool: volcanic rock walls sculpted by the river frame the waterfall at the end of the hike.
  • Swimming and assisted crossings: short swims, floating with a life jacket and guide ropes in stronger current make this feel like an expedition.
  • Local guides: the hike is guided, so you get help in deeper sections, good photos and the right gear.
  • Dry tropical forest: the trail follows the Río Blanco, where you may see white-faced monkeys, tropical birds and volcanic rock formations.

What to bring

  • Water shoes with excellent traction, or old sneakers you don’t mind soaking
  • A dry bag for your phone, keys and camera
  • Quick-dry sports or lycra clothing (avoid heavy cotton)
  • A full change of dry clothes and a towel to leave in the vehicle

Good to know

  • The hike is about 2 to 3 km round trip, with small rock scrambles and short swims against the current with a life jacket.
  • Moderate fitness and comfort in the water are recommended.
  • Book ahead in high season and on weekends.
